Fighting Back Against Neurological Illness

Health and care services for those with neurological conditions have been significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with many of these patients also facing an increased risk from the virus. But exercise has been shown to improve symptoms but the NHS is under tremendous pressure and cannot meet the needs all those people who would benefit.

WHY WERE WE SET UP?

On average an area like ours will have over 50,000 people suffering with neurological conditions but with very restricted specialist services for long term maintenance and improvement of their condition.
The local NHS provides good quality care for patients who are suffering an exacerbation of their condition but is unable to treat people after the acute episode is dealt with.

Our club aims to support the members AND their carers with services that aim to maximise the wellbeing of both groups.

Exercise has been proven to help stem the progression and maybe even improve the symptoms of this with conditions like Parkinson's.
A number of clinical studies have reported positive benefits from exercise in various neurologic disease states, suggesting that this mode of intervention should be considered as another option in clinical management. Despite this evidence, exercise is often neglected in patients with normal aging or neurologic disease progression.

We aim to correct this by provision of exercise twice a week , with separate classes for men and women, and subsidised for those who are unable to fund this themselves.

It is one of our aims that no-one should be excluded because of cost and therefore our fees are structured accordingly. We will therefore be continuing to fundraise to fund the subsidy

COFFEE CLUB

*** COMING SOON ***

We are running our coffee club for Carers of those with Neurological Conditions to coincide with the Classes above.

Please feel free to attend any day to mingle with other carers or friends and family of those who are attending the classes. Don’t worry if the person you care for is unable to attend you are always welcome to come and chat. We aim to support each other through what can be a challenging experience.

VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for volunteers to help our members participate in classes, as those with neurological conditions are prone to balance problems.

We would appreciate support from those training in, or retired from, the Allied Medical Health Professions but are happy to consider anyone with relevant skills.
